Saks To Remain Downtown

69

We’re not sure who broke up with whom, but Saks will not be moving to the Kenwood Collection after all. The store, which opened its downtown location in 1983, had announced a move to the long-suffering Kenwood shopping center along I-71 (known for its Crate & Barrel, Container Store, and rusting half-built hulk). But they could potentially stay put until at least 2018, when the current lease expires.

All of which is good news for city shopping, as Saks is the only truly high-end department store still operating downtown (apologies to Macy’s, but you know what we mean). Additionally, the new dunnhumby offices (which, so far, look eerily like the Death Star), set to open next spring, will provide scads of well-paid office workers looking to sample fancy perfumes. And new luxury boutique neighbors like Bang & Olufsen add to the party.

So for now, you can still get your Prada and La Prairie at Fifth and Race.
