DAAP Fashion Series: Ryan Bartoo + Molly Wimmel

248

Day two of our DAAP Fashion Designer profiles, and you’re in for a treat. Meet Ryan Bartoo and Molly Wimmel:

Cincinnati Fashion Designers

Name: Ryan Bartoo

Age: 23

Focus: Fashion Design

Describe your collection:
Women’s contemporary sportswear. Sleek, easy-chic, athletic essentials.

Who is your current favorite designer?
It’s hard to name just one, but Phoebe Philo at Céline is such an eternal inspiration.

What are your favorite materials to work with and why?
I design clothes for the body inside of them, so dense stretch fabrics á la Hervé Léger are a favorite of mine. Not only are they super easy to handle, but the body-hugging fit they achieve is beyond.

What is the craziest thing you’ve seen in the studio?
My classmates’ amazing designs on the dress forms! They are all superstars.

How often do you get a full eight hours of sleep?
Never.

What is your favorite piece in your collection?
It’s a tie between a bias cut slip dress with an impossibly high slit and a sharply cut body-con cocktail number.

Once the show is over, what will be your vice of choice?
Lots and lots of champagne.

Other than the above, what are your plans post-graduation?
I love lifestyle brands, so I’m leaning towards moving out west to California.

Cincinnati Fashion Designers

Name: Molly Wimmel

Age: 23

Focus: Fashion Design

Describe your collection:
Carnivora is a womenswear collection that explores the human tendency to desire, devour, and possess, and the taboo that surrounds women who do so without apology—a rejection of traditional gender roles, encouraging women to relish their ability to wield power.

Who is your current favorite designer?
Rick Owens has been my favorite designer for quite some time.

What are your favorite materials to work with and why?
I love working with leather. I worked with a diverse range of leathers while interning with Sruli Recht in Reykjavik, Iceland, which really gave me a feel for the sculptural qualities of leather and its versatility as a material.

What is the craziest thing you’ve seen in the studio?
The contents of the mini-fridge after it’s been unplugged all summer can be pretty terrifying.

How often do you get a full eight hours of sleep?
I usually get seven hours or so. I am not a happy camper with any less than that.

What is your favorite piece in your collection?
It’s a toss-up between the calf hair gilet and the transparent waxed-cotton jacket.

Once the show is over, what will be your vice of choice?
Television. Lots of television.

Other than the above, what are your plans post-graduation?
I would like to find a job at a small fashion studio similar to those I’ve interned at during my time at DAAP. I’ll be looking into jobs in New York City as well as abroad.
