RJ Smith has been an editor at Los Angeles magazine and The Village Voice, and has written for The New York Times Magazine, GQ, Vibe, Spin, Yeti and Grand Royal. His book The One: The Life and Music of James Brown, was selected as one of the New York Times's "100 Notable Books of 2012." RJ's first book, The Great Black Way: Los Angeles in the 1940s and the Lost African-American Renaissance, won a California Book Award in 2006. He grew up in Detroit, Michigan.
