Rustic Design Gets a Contemporary Update in Indian Hill

Built on the site of a former Cape Cod, this quietly elegant lodge-style home blends traditional and current design, to jaw-dropping effect. The most impressive space by far in this one-and-a-half-year-old home is the combination great room and dining room, separated only by a glass wall. The matte steel ceiling and reclaimed New England barn wood beams draw the eye, and it takes a few minutes to notice both the view—of the woods—and the two massive concrete fireplaces positioned at either end of the space.

Giant barn doors slide to reveal the über-sleek yet somehow still warm and inviting kitchen, where the cobblestones make way for eucalyptus wood floors with exposed nail-head trim. The developer is not a fan of traditional cabinetry, says listing agent Beth Dowling, so she specified handmade armoire-style storage instead. Modern sinks retrofitted in antique tables is a common theme throughout this five-bedroom, seven-bath house. So are stainless-steel toilets from Neo Metro ($3,000–$4,000  each), which are present in every bathroom.

The most impressive architectural feature of this wood-and-stone-clad structure (list price: $2.49 million) is the fact that the master suite is built directly over a creek bed. The developer’s original intent was to have owners walk out on the private back balcony and be able to look down into a flowing stream; for the time being, however, the water has been diverted and the creek is dry. New owners can opt to re-open the creek and complete the intended effect—it’s all water, as they say, under the bridge.
