Perched high on a hill overlooking Linwood Avenue, this 1918 craftsman-style home has had a bird’s-eye view of Mt. Lookout history. When it was built, Alms Park was only two years old, Christ the King church didn’t exist, and John Kilgour’s widow had just recently donated the land that would eventually house the neighborhood school. There’s a story (likely apocryphal) that claims a riverboat captain named Charlie Waters built this, plus two neighboring homes, just one year after a massive (and very real) tornado destroyed much of the area’s previous development. What sets this home—listed at $400,000 (sale pending at press time)—apart from other area craftsmans are the well-preserved details. The home’s original leaded and stained glass windows are all impeccably maintained. In the master suite, two leaded glass doors open out onto a narrow sleeping porch. The porch was likely originally screened, say current homeowners Joshua and Gwen Roth, but was enclosed some time ago after a limb from the tree in the front yard fell on the home. When it comes to built-ins, the bank of kitchen cabinets beside the refrigerator can both keep, and take, the cake. There is a built-in spice rack, a very deep drawer with partitions to separate baking sheets, and a wooden cutting board that still slides effortlessly in and out of sight—all original. The home has modern amenities, too, like a basement family room complete with full bar. Even so, there’s little doubt that Captain Waters would be proud of how well his Mt. Lookout bungalow has weathered the test of time.
