Veracruz Is a Pleasant Surprise in East Price Hill

If you didn’t know it was there, you might miss it, and that’d be a shame. But judging by the nearly full dining room on a Monday night, the cat just might be out of the bag: Veracruz is the best authentic Mexican fare in Price Hill. In a neighborhood with such a substantial Hispanic immigrant population, that’s saying quite a bit. Last year, it even expanded into the vacant space next door, doubling its size and adding a full bar, dining room, and back patio. Stop in and you’ll understand why.

Upon first greeting, you’ll feel the warmth. It’s run by the Aulis family, and you can tell they care deeply about treating you and yours to something special. Like many Mexican restaurants, there’s the obligatory chips and salsa, but the flakiness of Veracruz’s warm corn tortilla chips is unique. Either accept your fullness-by-chip fate (no shame!) and go all-in on the dip trio—a chunky guacamole with ribbons of bright cilantro; a creamy, indulgent queso blanco; and a tangy yet fiery verde house sauce—or save room for meatier ventures, like the enchiladas. Take your pick of chicken or beef, and they’ll smother the filled and rolled tortillas to perfection with any of the aforementioned sauces and top with sour cream, cheese crumbles, avocado slices, and red onions. Even with more simplistic dishes, they don’t disappoint: Their humble quesadilla left my picky dining partner grinning ear to ear.
