What may be the best fine dining bargain in the city started five years ago when Nicola and Maureen Pietoso needed a way to drum up business on a traditionally slow dining night. They decided to offer their Bolognese—a 50–50 blend of beef and veal simmered in whole milk and tomatoes, ladled over tagliatelle—for just $15. (Vegans can get a non-dairy version with artichoke hearts and tomato sauce.) Want in on this deal? Arrive early or make a reservation: Monday has surpassed Friday as Nicola’s second busiest night of the week. This past January, the restaurant served a single-day record 118 Bolo specials, each accompanied by a house salad with a truffle and fig balsamic dressing. Expect a call from the Guinness folks soon.
