Calling All Competitive Cooks!
This Sunday is a hot day for community cooking contests in the Queen City. Findlay Market celebrates its 10th annual Chili Cookoff from 11 to 3 p.m. Contestants must pre-register by Friday with their recipe and an entry form (available at Findlay’s website). The contest will be limited to 30 chili-makers and take place in a heated tent on the north side of the market house. Winners will be chosen by local Engine Company Number 5 (since firemen are natural chili experts). First prize is $100 and the chance to advance to regionals. Second and third prizes are $50 each. Live music will be provided by Anna and Milovan and craft beer from Christian Moerlein will also be available. Free public tastings will begin at 12:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, across town at the Isaac M. Wise temple in Amberley Village, the seventh annual Chicken Soup Cookoff will be heating up. Both pro and amateur soup divisions (at this time, both divisions are full) will feature the following categories: best matzo ball soup, best original soup, best chicken noodle soup, and the people’s choice award. The event, held from 12:15 to 2 p.m., is sponsored by Kroger, Jewish Hospital and the Mayerson JCC. A silent auction, door prizes, live music, and plenty of Marx bagels are just a sample of the festivities. This year, the event will debut the Kids Koop, a special play area for children aged 3 to 8 that will feature a DJ-hosted chicken dance and chicken-themed story time, movies, crafts, and snacks. Children’s meals are also available for $3. Entrance to the event, which raises money for the Wise Temple Brotherhood (to continue their outreach work feeding the hungry and working with at-risk youth), is $6 for adults, $4 for children and $16 for a family and includes a bagel buffet.
