Passage to India

We tried out some treats from Brij Mohan, Cincinnati’s hookup to the sweet side of Southeast Asian cuisine.

  1. Our favorite of the bunch was the milk cake, which tastes exactly like it sounds. The cake is flavored with “caramelized milk fudge” (wha?) and shredded pistachios.

  2. Looking less like candy and more like overgrown SpaghettiOs, the brightly colored jalebi is surprisingly sweet and crisp. It’s made with deep fried lentil batter dipped in flavored sugar syrup.

  3. Peda is the most flowery (and attractive) of all the desserts, and features the unmistakable color and scent of saffron.

  4. Say hello to Indian hush puppies: Ladoo is deep fried gram flour sugared with pistachios.

  5. Gulab Jamun contains ricotta cheese rolled up and dipped in flavored sugar syrup.

  6. Gajar Burfi is the Indian take on the bar cookie, except this one features carrots, milk, and a sprinkling of shredded pistachios.
