When Cincinnati’s culinary darling Jean-Robert de Cavel and his wife Annette lost their 4-month-old daughter, Tatiana, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in 2002, the restaurant community rallied. Determined to pull some good from the tragedy, local chefs and restaurateurs assisted the de Cavels in their Seven Days for SIDS fund drive by collecting money for SIDS research and awareness. Since the first official SIDS Brunch in 2004, the Midwest Culinary Institute at Cincinnati State has helped raised more than $750,000 for a fund in her honor—the Tatiana de Cavel Scholarship—as well as organizations such as Cradle Cincinnati and Cribs for Kids. This month, the 11th annual brunch will feature nibbles from Senate, Happy Chicks Bakery, and Coffee Emporium. “They’ll bring their A-game for Jean-Robert,” says Amy Hunter, vice president of The de Cavel Family SIDS Foundation. Hunter promises a mixture of sweet and savory options, extraordinary takes on Eggs Benedict, and plenty of good, old-fashioned goetta. The event will also feature a silent auction where guests can bid on wine, jewelry, a private dinner at home prepared by a notable Cincinnati chef, and an up-close-and-personal giraffe encounter at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. October 19. Tickets: adults $65 ($75 at the door), children 5–10 $20, 4 and under free. Midwest Culinary Institute, eatplaygive.net
