Rascals’ Sauerkraut Balls

I am not really a fan of deep-fried food. I make exceptions for certain falafel recipes and the occasional egg roll, but you will never see me wasting precious stomach space on “poppers” of any sort, let alone funnel cakes or deep-fried Snickers bars. But after one too many people recommended the deep-fried concoction of minced sauerkraut, corned beef, and onions rolled in caraway seed-studded rye bread crumbs, I knew I was going to have to try it, if only in the name of research. On a recent trip to Rascals’ New York Deli in Blue Ash, after ordering a more customary (for me) bowl of matzo ball soup and one of their giant salads, I took the plunge. I fully expected to take a few nibbles, so that I could say I’d given them a chance. The next thing I knew, I’d eaten all three of the beyond-rich and savory balls, each about two inches in diameter, slathered multiple times with generous dollops of their creamy Russian dressing. I still don’t know how it happened, but the $2.75 order of Sauerkraut balls was a cheap eat game changer for me. Mazel tov, Rascals!
