Kinneret Café’s Seitan Shawarma

The words “vegan sandwich” don’t typically stoke my foodie fever. But I must admit, Kinneret Café’s Seitan Shawarma pita sandwich got my full attention. Large, tender crumbles of fermented soybean cake are deeply infused with curry and cumin (and possibly coriander…) before being pan-seared. They’re tossed with Israeli salad (tomato, cucumber, and onion), packed into a fresh and fluffy pita, and served with a side of tehina (tahini) sauce. The sandwich was part of a $6.95 lunch special that also included a cup of deeply flavorful matzah ball soup and a drink.

This kosher café in Deer Park specializes in Israeli and Mediterranean food, serving up standards such as falafel, babaganoush, and hummus. But they also offer a variety of pizzas, including a cheese-free, vegan version. I’m already plotting how soon I can get back to try the falafel and stuffed grape leaves. Mazel tov!
