In this question from the July 2012 issue, Dr. Know suggests some appropriate gifts for local friends who've moved out of the country.
I’ll be traveling internationally this summer, staying with Cincinnati friends who’ve moved to Europe. I’d like to take a hostess gift—something that will remind them of home. What would the Doctor suggest? —Eager to Please Dear Eager:Hmmm. If the TSA goons have their way with your luggage, the package of delicious but small and fragile Klosterman coney buns in a thoughtful coney-kit gift package would be mashed to the dimensions of a debit card, so that’s out. Have you thought about local fashion items? I understand gentlemen’s pleated pants are hard to find on the other side of the Atlantic. Christmas sweaters and flashing earrings are equally scarce over there, although by the time you satisfactorily explain the LEDs in the sweater to the TSA agents you will have missed the last Delta flight with SkyMiles seats for the next six months. So that won’t work. Perhaps you should render a service we take for granted here but which can’t be found in other countries, such as a fashion-free haircut.
