The portions are so big at this newish Oakley spot,
the place must spend a fortune on takeout containers (my husband and I left with three of them). Co-owner Laura Krauser says regulars know to order dinner with an eye toward tomorrow’s lunch. Great Scott opened in August 2012 in a quirky Tudor roadhouse on Madison Road, the former site of Nick’s Chops & Chasers. The building had been vacant for five years but Krauser and Scott Elsaesser (who own another Great Scott in Withamsville and a diner in Amelia) liked the proximity to Crossroads church and the emerging Oakley Station development. Their renovation retains some throwback style, with dark wood beams, tables topped with oilcloths and brass lamps, and a paneled bar that feels like a well-appointed basement rec room circa 1980. The menu extends beyond pub fare to include main-course salads, pastas, and meat-plus-side entrées. Smoky, bacon-wrapped shrimp skewers perch atop a mound of chopped lettuce and corn salsa; the house salad is piled with cheese and croutons, served well-chilled, which is how you want your iceberg. An Oktoberfest menu features German favorites including schnitzel and sausages. The award-winning beer list is likewise sizable, with 100 bottles (domestics, imports, microbrews) and a dozen drafts. Great Scott is a place for folks who enjoy freshly made comfort food—and a lot of it. Just don’t forget your takeout boxes when you leave.
