Crêpes are the corn dog of France. I’m serious. Head south from Paris and there are these little roadside stands where a sweaty, middle-aged guy in a “Pas De Jeune Filles De Belgique” (No Belgian Chicks) muscle shirt rolls up a 40 centimeter (16-inch) crêpe with no-telling-what-kind of savory filling inside for you. It was a real delight to see the griddles at It’s Just Crêpes when I first went there a year ago. There are more than three dozen options on the menu and I haven’t had one yet that wasn’t a magical merge-in-the-mouth experience. The Good Morning has eggs, bacon, and cheddar. The Pizza has mozzarella, pepperoni, mushroom, and pizza sauce. And my favorite of the savory crêpes is the Southwestern. It comes with Pepper Jack, chicken, sauteed onions, red peppers, and chipotle mayo. More good news: They don’t frown on substitutions here, since everything is made to order right in front of you. Most people can’t down both a dessert crêpe and a dinner crêpe, me included. So, often I go with my fallback—the Banana Split: Nutella, banana slices, homemade vanilla crème, and nuts. This is probably the most popular crêpe in Europe and one bite will tell you why. The decor here is vogue, the music is avant garde, and there’s free wi-fi for the kids. Success has been so swift that they’ve opened a second location downtown on Fourth. It’s Just Crêpes is just a great fast meal.
