Short North Gallery Hop in Columbus

219

On the first Saturday of each month, shops along the Columbus Short North Arts District stay open late to host the Gallery Hop, a night to mingle through art galleries, charming boutiques, and a range of locally-owned bars and restaurants.

The event is as simple as the name suggests: Local shops and galleries along North High Street keep their doors open through the night to let the city’s vibrant arts community peruse their way through each stop. The event is loosely slated to run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., but shops may open earlier and bars and restaurants are typically running well into the night.

The Hop is a great way to check out dozens of local Columbus businesses and meet the business owners. Gallery runners and artists stand with their collections to answer questions and chat with guests, and boutiques featuring locally-designed clothing and handcrafted goods have their best items on show.

On average, more than 40 galleries and non-traditional art venues participate in spotlighting the artwork of Ohio natives, along with work by nationally and internationally–recognized artists. The streets come to life, too: Musicians stage themselves on street corners, and  street performers and vendors flock the sidewalks.

The Gallery Hop attracts patrons of the arts from locals to out-of-towners both young and old—and what they’re doing seems to have staying power. This year, the Hop is celebrating 30 years of showing off Columbus’ continually growing arts scene.
