Thin scratches adorn the counter of Pet Wants in Findlay Market. Two years’ worth of hungry canines have carved them into the wood—dogs jonesing for a frozen Pawsicle or any number of pet-friendly confections dreamed up by proprietors ’Chele Hobbs and Amanda Broughton.
The store was born out of hot spots and hair loss. The couple’s dog, Jackson, was having an allergic reaction to his food. Concerned for his health, they developed a vitamin-rich recipe, free of gluten, starch, and animal by-products. After a few weeks of feeding, Jackson’s fur was flourishing. Noting the market potential, the pair opened Pet Wants in June 2010, where they offer six varieties of kibble and three types of cat food “on tap,” dried chew treats, biodegradable cat litter, and more common staples like leashes, toys, and food dishes.
This June, Hobbs and Broughton opened up a new store at East 14th and Vine called Pet Wants Kitchen. Although the interior decoration is similar to the Findlay location (think super-old wooden bins, antique carts, and log shelves), Pet Wants Kitchen is purely a feed store, selling raw and cooked dog food and treats. Outside, bistro tables line the sidewalk in front of a hand-painted mural that mimics a country porch.
As for that flagship fresh kibble, Pet Wants now delivers to nearly 600 clients in the Cincinnati area. “It all started with a product we needed,” Hobbs says. “Turns out, so did a lot of people.”
