"I Can" by Kirk Franklin

The Official Song of the 2012 World Choir Games

The song was released May 23, 2012, under the Procter & Gamble Productions label, and will be performed for the first time on July 4 at the Opening Ceremony of the Games by Kirk Franklin and a mass choir comprised of three Gospel choirs registered to compete in The Champions Competition of the World Choir Games. They are: Voices of Unity (Fort Wayne, Indiana), the 2010 Champion of the World Choir Games in Gospel & Spiritual; Peace & Serenity (Cincinnati and New York); and Calvary Choir (Cincinnati).

“The song is an expression of peace, hope and unity,” Franklin says. “We can all make this world a better place, whether through singing or working together in other ways. It’s an important message for the World Choir Games and beyond.”

Franklin made music history in 1993 with the release of his debut album, Kirk Franklin and the Family, which became the first gospel album to sell more than 1 million units. In 2009, Franklin’s 11th CD, The Fight of My Life, was awarded two Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album and Best Gospel Song for “Help Me Believe.” It follows his previous RIAA-certified platinum CD, Hero, which remained in the Top 10 on the Billboard charts for close to two years after its release. His latest chart-topping album, Hello Fear (with the No. 1 hit single “I Smile”), went certified gold by the RIAA.

Lyrics

*As it will be performed in Cincinnati, an alternate verse was inserted for the World Choir Games as noted below)

Sing a song to heal your pain
End world hunger, no more hate
Make this world a better place
If I could-if I could

Fear and terror, I’d erase
Give that child a brighter day
The debt of nations I would pay
If I could-if I could

*Cincinnati, one in song
A world united, voices strong
Nation’s singing can right the wrongs
Sing together now …

(chorus)
No more fighting, no more war.
Don’t live afraid, be who you are
It’s a new day so help me say
I CAN I-I-I-I     I CAN I-I-I-I   I CAN

With one voice this world
can change
Soon our differences will fade
No longer will the people say
If I could-if I could …

*Cincinnati, one in song
A world united, voices strong
Nation’s singing can right the wrongs
Sing together now …

(chorus)
No more fighting, no more war.
Don’t live afraid, be who you are
It’s a new day so help me say
I CAN I-I-I-I     I CAN I-I-I-I   I CAN

I can make it. I can stand.
I’ll love my neighbor,
and heal the land
Every nation, lend your hand
Don’t wait too late

I-I-I-I I CAN I-I-I-I
I CAN I-I-I-I   I CAN

Sing together now.

(chorus)
No more fighting, no more war.
Don’t live afraid be who you are.
It’s a new day so help me say
I CAN I-I-I-I     I CAN I-I-I-I
I CAN I-I-I-I     I CAN I-I-I-I
I CAN

Verse released by label:

No excuses, In my way
A new season, no mistakes
The earth she cries it’s time
for change
Sing together now ...
