With bright flowers, dinner alfresco, and the sweetest dessert table, Amanda’s and Kayla’s garden-party wedding was anything but garden variety.

The vision may sound simple—a lovely garden party–themed wedding for Kayla Closson and Amanda Hignite on a historic estate—but the execution took some careful planning.

Fortunately, as an event coordinator at The Center, Kayla was already in-the-know with the region’s top vendors, so it was easy for her to assemble an all-star team. “They understood our vision—that we wanted a very bright-colored spring garden party without looking like Easter blew up,” she jokes.

The date was April 29, 2017. The morning’s weather was ominous, but the torrential rain didn’t rattle the brides. By afternoon, the skies had lightened and the sun was warm.

Laurel Court created a romantic stage for the celebration. As the ceremony closed, the couple poured a champagne tower to kick off the reception, and guests headed to the courtyard for dinner under bistro lights.

The flowers, naturally, played a starring role in the decor. The brides’ bouquets were bright, burgeoning bundles of tulips, peonies, and other spring flowers. Centerpieces followed suit with cheery colors and were anchored by copper, rose gold, and even wooden box planters. Periwinkle linens added an extra boost of color.

The brides included several DIY touches as well. The table numbers, head table place cards, and signs for the ceremony and dessert table were all hand-painted by Kayla and stayed true to the garden theme. The menus were hand-stamped on doilies and placed at each guest’s seat. “We were trying to be unique without being over-the-top,” Kayla says.

Dinner was designed to be “an experience.” Guests were treated to a starter of tomato basil bisque with polenta crust and a main course of chicken saltimbocca with a chianti demi-glace or grilled artichoke with cheese ravioli and parmesan truffle cream sauce.

For dessert, the couple chose a dessert table with doughnuts, macaroons, cookies, and brownies, though they did spring for an exquisite, floral-topped cutting cake by Sugar Realm.

Dancing commenced inside, with guests free to roam the decadently adorned rooms of the mansion. As the evening wound down, guests visited the made-to-order grilled cheese bar before loading a shuttle with full bellies and happy, but tired, dancing feet.
