This is James Brown’s World

171

James Brown was a master of the audio and visual arts. To accompany our December issue’s comic strip feature on the making of the earth-shaking Live at the Apollo in 1963, here are some clips of the Godfather in action.

1.Here he is in 1964, all the way live for a movie called The T.A.M.I. Show. It’s the closest filmed representation of what that Apollo show was like.

2) The Apollo Theater in Harlem was Brown’s home away from home. Here he is, performing “Cold Sweat” at the Apollo, in 1968. It was recorded for James Brown: Man to Man, a documentary on the singer.

3) Finally here is one of Brown’s greatest—and most out there—performances, a duet with Luciano Pavarotti on his classic “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” filmed in Pavarotti’s home town, Modena, Italy, in 2002.
