Return of the King

51

In a holiday season packed with traditional favorites, few have been around as long as iconic composer George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, which premiered in Dublin in 1742. Charles Jennens’s scriptural text, compiled from the King James Bible, tells the story of Jesus as Messiah and is propelled by an oratorio that became one of the most popular in Western music. Conductor James Bagwell guides the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the May Festival Chorus’s interpretation of the enduring classic.
