We’ll Take Manhattan

We’re just guessing that Ultimate Air Shuttle’s New York service is gonna be booked solid the second week of May. That’s when Cincinnatians are descending on the city en masse for Cincy In NYC; it’s sort of an artistic barnstorming to show Manhattan what we’re made of. Well, what some of us are made of.

The idea started with Cincinnati Ballet’s 50th anniversary tour, which just happens to coincide with the CSO/May Festival one-night stand at Carnegie Hall. Then CCM’s Ariel Quartet booked a date at the 92nd Street Y; the school’s jazz alums got up a gig at Jazz at Lincoln Center; the Playhouse put together a reading of Theresa Rebeck’s new comedy, Fools; and on and on.

All of this is intended to show New York the brilliance that lies on the north bank of the Ohio. And perhaps to bring some dollars and offspring back home. There are plans for a “speed dating” event to introduce New York investors to Queen City start-ups. Also in the works, according to Julie Shifman, the ballet board member behind the project: a party MC’ed by Dhani Jones for NYC young professionals who are native Cincinnatians. “We want to tell them, ‘When you’re thinking about leaving New York, come check us out,” Shifman says. Each arts organization is paying its own way, with help from individual supporters. But we bet the party for young professionals is being underwritten by HPQC—Helicopter Parents of the Queen City.
