Madison Ribberfest

If you didn’t get enough barbecue in our July issue and you’re too starving for brisket-en-masse to wait for the River Grill Before the Big Chill (October 10 & 11, Sawyer Point), then you’re in luck.

August 15 & 16, head west for Madison Ribberfest, the Indiana city’s annual celebration of all things blues and barbecue. The competition is Kansas City Barbecue Society–sanctioned (which means these are serious contenders) with seven juried categories: chicken, pork ribs, pork, beef brisket, barbecue sauce, anything butt, and dessert. And backyard barbecuers will have their own (friendlier) cook-off too.

There’s a full lineup of blues, kid-specific programming, a cornhole tournament (termed the pig toss—what else?), and a 5K run (to, you know, burn off two bites of that slaw-covered sandwich), so your day will be as full as your belly.

Go forth and eat barbecue. And then come home and eat more.

Tickets $20 for two-day pass, 601 W. First St., Madison, Indiana, (800) 559-2956, madisonribberfest.com
